Decide on the artistic direction you are going to take.
For Hairdressing Award participants choose your category.
Aim to get the whole look right, not just the hair.
Compile a storyboard with different textures, fabrics, colours and images, this will help the final look to fall into place.
Decide on the mood of your collection:
Black and white or colour.
Head and shoulders or full length shots.
Commercial feel or editorial.
Decide on your budget and stick to it.
Take into account fees for:
ModelsMake-up ArtistClothes StylistPhotographerStudio & hired equipmentCateringPossible travel & accommodation costs including expenses.Do not overrun the planned budget by overrunning booked timings for the above team.
Decide on a shooting location and appropriate technical equipment (include the photographer in the decision):
Studio or outside location?
For outdoor location consider the climate as well as a possible permit from the state or landlord.
Decide on the team structure (Make-up Artist, Clothes Stylist, Photographer, Models).
Choose the right model according to the direction of your photo shoot.
Ensure suitability.
Be aware that this is one of the most expensive elements to get right. If needed, contact a model agency.
Your budget will determine what kind of models you choose.Look for new faces if you want to keep the cost down but check fist the usage of the models and check their experience when moving or posing in front of the camera, in company. If you want to publish your work, check the copyrights to get the full PR use for 1 year.Organise a model casting (to be arranged by the agency if you use one).Clarify with the agency, or directly with the models, that their hair has to cut and coloured.Give a full brief on what you want to achieve.Select your photographer very carefully, as they are one of the most important elements to a successful shoot.
To find the right photographer look at hair and beauty magazines and read the credits on the looks you like.Alternatively check out the Internet and look at agency books. The photographer should be able to understand your vision and have the experience to interpret this into the images. Decide if you want to focus on fashion or beauty, but do not loose the focus on hair.Decide whether to shoot on digital or film. Digital will show the result instantly and can be enhanced, film will give a raw feel and can add depth to an image.
Re-touching: Removing blemishes and cleaning the background is fine, however do not rely on digitally removing your mistakes afterwards.Finish the hair properly, as hair that has been retouched will only show your weaknesses.Involve the photographer in choice of location.
